St. Thomas Student Wins Second Place in a Statewide Essay CompetitionCongratulations to Ivy Chen, an eighth grade student at St. Joseph the Carpenter School in Roselle. Ivy placed second in the state for her essay, “What the American Flag Means to Me.” The piece was written as an assignment for her computer teacher, Mrs. Orlando, who had instructed the class to personalize their responses.

Ivy’s essay was chosen from thousands across the state in a contest sponsored by PNC Bank in association with the QuickChek New Jersey Festival of Ballooning, the largest hot air balloon and music festival in North America. Ivy’s prize included a family pack of four tickets to the festival along with other merchandise. The festival will take place later this month at the Solberg Airport in Readington, NJ.
