Saint James the Apostle School Students Raise Over $3,000 for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

Saint James the Apostle School students rallied for the last couple of months in support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Improving Lives – Curing Type 1 Diabetes campaign. Led by Grade 1 teacher, Mrs. Stacy West, and Grade 5 teacher, Ms. Jean Feely, the students set a goal of $3,000. Mrs. West’s son, Noah, who was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes several years ago, visited the school to speak with the students and share his experience. The students were engaged and motivated to do their very best to reach the goal.

The entire school was given an opportunity to participate by purchasing paper sneakers to support diabetes research. Over 100 sneakers now adorn the hallways of Saint James. The school’s Knitting Club created colorful scarves, hats, purses, bracelets, and headbands for sale. Some of the proceeds from a recent Student Council sponsored dress-down day (Dress for a Cause) were added to the donations. Students in Grade 1 organized a “Hole in One” competition during lunch time. They also hosted a Mother’s Day magnet sale, selling flower shaped magnets they helped paint and decorate.

On Friday, May 18, the entire school assembled to hear the results. Saint James the Apostle School students exceeded expectations raising $3,155.40. Mrs. West and her first graders presented JDRF representative, Stacy D’Archangel, a very large check created by our Art teacher, Mrs. Traci Burns. Following the good news of reaching the goal, the students celebrated with a walk around the school.

In the last three years, Saint James the Apostle School students have raised over $10,000 in support of Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Heifer International and now JDRF. It is amazing to see the students use their time and talent, as well as their own treasure, to help those they do not even know.
