The ceremony, attended by UC's Class of 2021 and several faculty members, was conducted by senior students in leadership positions, and moderated by Mr. John Becht.
After the opening song, "Immaculate Mary,'' was played, UC's Ana Kwiatkowski delivered an introduction that described the significance of the May Crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary. That was followed by readings from Karen Melendez Alas, Isabela Allen, Allyson Almeida, and CJ Tomalavage.
Gillian Caldas then handed a wreath made of flowers to Tommy Armstrong, who had the honor of crowning the statue of Mary. There was also a ceremony outside as Katherine Petrick handed the wreath to Addison Montemayor, who placed it on the head of the statue of Mary, which is located in the front of the school.
Becht, a Campus Minister at Union Catholic, explained the importance of the ceremony and how much The Blessed Mary means to Union Catholic."The Blessed Mother is such an important part of Union Catholic,'' said Becht. "Mary is an enormous presence for us here. She's the first thing you see when you look at our building. We have a significant connection with Mary, so the fact that we as a student body and faculty can join together on a day like today and crown the statues and pray with Mary is a nice moment for the whole school.''
