POSITION:  Head Custodian

LOCATION:  St. Joseph the Carpenter School, Roselle, NJ 07203

REPORTS TO: Principal/Pastor

DURATION:  12-month position

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:   The Head Custodian will perform the necessary upkeep and repair of the various systems mechanical and otherwise necessary for the function of the school.  In addition, the head custodian will be responsible for the preventative and general maintenance of the school, school yard and school grounds.


The following specific duties and responsibilities are representative of the duties required for this position. They may be unilaterally but reasonably changed based on the working environment and the needs of the school.

–        Performs general maintenance of building which includes but is not limited to waste and rubbish collection, operation of buffing and other cleaning machinery and  general housekeeping

–        Cleans all areas including hallways, stairwells, bathrooms and cafeteria on a schedule as well as maintenance of the same.

–        Paint, repair school fixtures, repair plaster, plumbing and school furnishings

–        Collect and transport trash etc. to disposal area and contact collection service when issues arise

–        Perform annual summer deep cleaning of the building

–        Move, repair and maintain school furnishings

–        Change light bulbs, light fixtures, ceiling tiles, floor tiles, and other routine maintenance either on a needs basis or by schedule

–        Assist with snow and ice removal on school/church property

–        Provide presence and needed help during school events. Occasionally be available for evening and weekend events for either school or church.

–        Orders, stores and maintains cleaning supplies

–        Set up and break down cafeteria and/or auditorium for events

–        Has understanding and can maintain and run the heating system

–        Put in and remove window air conditioners at the appropriate time of year

–        Opening and closing of school and maintenance of keys

–        Coordinate state school security drills with administration

–        Annual end of year classroom/cafeteria inventory and needs

–        Supervision of janitorial staff

–        Be flexible as the needs of a school are constantly changing



–        Knowledge of and have “hands on” experience regarding heating, cooling, plumbing and electrical systems

–        Ability to analyze and solve problems within the buildings systems

–        Good organizational skills

–        Good communication and people skills

–        Tolerance for children

–        Handle heavy workloads, if necessary

–        Have completed or willing to attend Protecting God’s Children program

–        Have been fingerprinted and clear to work in a school


–        Black seal preferred

–        – High School Diploma, GED or higher

–        1 year related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
